This is my great, great uncle Nick. Before he died, he had to have his left arm amputated. He had it buried in the cemetery.
He died from Paget's Disease of the left humerus, which began 10 years before his death. It caused cancer of that arm bone, which then became metastatic to his lungs four months prior to his death.
He was married to the former Blanche Eugenia Skinner, and they had one child, a daughter named Reta in 1929. She was a welcome surprise to Nick and Blanche and was quite doted on! Unfortunately, Reta died in 2011, but during my genealogy research, I accidentally found Reta's daughter. We have been emailing and comparing notes, and she sent me these pictures of my uncle and her grandfather.
Uncle Nick ran a gas station/oil company, back in the days when fuel oil was used to heat homes. I will post the pictures of Uncle Nick in his fuel delivery truck as soon as I get them scanned.
An article from the local paper circa 1958:
"A fine old business firm name fades from the picture with the announcement that the Nickerson Oil Company of Kempton, Illinois has been sold to the Sweeney Gasoline and Oil Company of Peoria.
The Nickerson firm was founded three and one-half decades ago (about 1922-1923) by L.M. 'Nick' Nickerson, affectionately remembered by hundreds and thousands throughout the area. Sale of the business is made by the widow on account of health reasons and mounting responsibilities."
Rest in peace Uncle Nick.
