Excerpts from the Thursday, November 7, 2013 Braselton News By Katie Cofer.
"Donald Moon hired as one of Athens, Georgia's first African American police officers in 1961. At the age of 30, Moon had served with the Athens Police Department for only 19 months when he was shot in the chest and killed on November 3, 1963 while trying to apprehend a teenager who ambushed his vehicle with a shotgun. Although Moon was off duty at the time of his death, he was a full-time certified police officer obligated by sworn duty to pursue the offender. He served his country in the United States Army and he demonstrated immense courage, as he was one of the first two black police officers hired…in a very different era than in which we live today. Moon and his first cousin were the original two who were hired in 1961. "
