Dr. James Everett Barfield, Sr., a revered practicing physician in Vidalia for almost 50 years, died Tuesday evening, July 20, 1999 in the Meadows Memorial Regional Nursing Center in Vidalia.
The 77-year-old Macon, Georgia native was the son of the late Henry Lee Barfield and Minnie Daniel Barfield. He was a graduate of Macon's Lanier High School, Mercer University and the Medical College of Georgia. He served in the Naval Air Corps during World War II and was an escort with the D-Day Invasion Forces.
Dr. Barfield began his practice of medidine in 1952 and was a moving force in securing the grant that established the Meadows Memorial Hospital where he later served as Chief of Staff. In recent years, the popular physician had closed his practice and was semi-retired but remained active in civic and religious affairs.
Dr. Barfield is survived by his wife, Laverne Phillips Barfield, Vidalia; two son's, James Everett Barfield, Jr., Macon, and Jiles McNatt Barfield, Vidalia; one daughter, Mary Kathrin Barfield, Savannah; three grandchildren, Michael Everett Barfield, Rebecca Barfield and Lee Barfield; three brothers, Marion Felder Barfield, Tucker, Georgia, John Daniel Barfield, Tuscon, Arizona, and Robert Edward Barfield, Amarillo, Texas; and one sister, Marion Barfield Garrette, Macon.
Funeral services for Dr. Barfield were held Friday, July 12, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. in the First Methodist Church of Vidalia with the Reverend Paul Dupree officiating. Interment followed in Lakeview Memorial Gardens. Murchison Funeral Home, Vidalia, Georgia, was in charge of funeral arrangements.
The family has asked that commemorative donations offered in the memory of the deceased be made to the donor's preferred charity.
