Joe Lawton Aldrich, 81, of Waycross died Tuesday evening at his residence after a short illness. He was a native of Wayne County and was raised and educated in Waycross. Mr. Aldrich lived here for most of his life except for time spent serving his country in the United States Army. He was retired after 43 years of service from the Coast Line Railroad as a Car Inspector.
Mr. Aldrich was a member of White Hall Freewill Baptist Church, the Adult Sunday School Class and served as a Deacon. He loved to fish and garden. He was known as the "Okra Man". He grew okra and other vegetables in his garden and would give them to his neighbors and friends at no charge. His parents were the late Dave and Delphia Aldrich. He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Herman Aldrich, Lonnie Aldrich, Floyd Aldrich, Bob Aldrich and Ivey Aldrich, four sisters, Essie Barber, Rosie Thornton, Lottie Sheffield and Eunice Woodcock.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Evelyn Thrift Aldrich, Waycross, one son, David Aldrich (wife Cindy), Hartwell, GA, one daughter, Teresa Ammons, Hoboken, five grandchildren, Bradley Aldrich, Macon, Mandy Aldrich, Athens, Tara Thrift, Hoboken, Hampton Ammons, II, Tifton, Juston Ammons, Hoboken, two great-grandchildren, Kayla Thrift and Hannah Thrift, both of Hoboken, two brothers, Talmadge Aldrich, Offerman, Lester Aldrich, Blackshear, one sister, Fannie Strickland, Alma, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 am at White Hall Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Kettle Creek Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 - 8 pm at the funeral home.
