George Huston Black, 70, of Ringgold, died on Sunday, April 12, 2009, at his residence.
He was a lifelong resident of North Georgia and a member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Oglethorpe. Mr. Black was the only first string all state football player from Ringgold High School.
He served as the principal of Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High School for 15 years and served as maintenance director for Catoosa County Schools for over 25 years.
The baseball stadium at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School is named in his honor. Mr. Black was an avid woodworker.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Mattie Dills Black, and brother, Roger Black.
Survivors are his wife of 48 years, Gloria Black; son, Peter Black, Staten Island, New York; daughter, Susan Black, Ringgold; brother, Eugene (Hiedi) Black, Ringgold; grandchild, Nicholas Lemley; great-grandchild, Mason Lemley; aunt, Gertrude Motley; uncle, Gordon Black; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. on Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Dan Scott, Rev. R.V. Wells, and Rev. Don Shipman officiating. Private interment will be in Gordy Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Huston Black Tree Planting Memorial Fund, c/o Capital Bank, P.O. Box 2146, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. 30742, the American Cancer Society, or the American Lung Association.
