Donell Thompson Akers, 77, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2011, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility, with her family by her side and under the loving care of her Hospice family. She was born in Metter, Georgia, on August 28, 1933, to Don and Lillian Thompson. Donell moved to Statesboro at the age of 10. She graduated from Statesboro High School in 1950 and University of Georgia in 1954. Donell taught school in College Park, Georgia, for five years before marrying and moving to New Jersey for one year, then returning to Statesboro. She was an active member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity Gamma Pi Chapter, where she served as house president and corresponding secretary and also the Statesboro Zeta Tau Alpha Alumnae Chapter. Donell received her Order of the Shield Award for 50 years of membership and the Zeta Lady for District VII-A in 2003. Also, she was instrumental in colonizing the Zeta Xi Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha at Georgia Southern in 1969 as well as serving as treasurer of the ZTA Alumnae Chapter. She was a proud member of the University of Georgia Bulldog Club and Alumni Club, attending every football game possible and many class reunions. Donell was a devoted volunteer for five years at Ogeechee Area Hospice and was fondly known as the "flower lady". She was a member of the Statesboro First Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 25 years and was honored with the 2005 Honorary Lifetime member of the Presbyterian Women.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, William Thomas "Bill" Akers Sr.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Lillian Akers Brown and Jimmy Hill of Statesboro and Esther and William Vickers of Statesboro; one son and daughter-in-law, William Thomas "Bill T." and Lisa Akers of Statesboro. Donell is also survived by her five cherished grandchildren, Mary Katherine Brown of Athens and Statesboro, Jessica Donell Vickers, Jeff Vickers, Lauren Akers and Julianne Akers, all of Statesboro; four loving grand-dogs, Sallie, Barney and Minnie Brown and Angel Vickers; a very loyal and special friend, Jan Martin of Statesboro.

Donell enjoyed cooking and sharing food with friends and shut-ins. She was graciously involved in her children's and grandchildren's school and extracurricular activities, proudly encouraging and cheering. Donell was an avid reader and loved to crotchet, making countless baby blankets for family and friends. Her favorite times were with family and friends watching over her much loved Georgia Bulldogs.

The graveside service and burial will be Saturday, April 16th, 2011, at 11 a.m. in the Eastside Cemetery in Statesboro. Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home of Statesboro is in charge of the arrangements.
