Statesboro - John Chesley Adams Sr., 79, died Saturday at Augusta Veterans Hospital after a long illness. The Hart County native lived in Statesboro since 1949. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force, a Major serving in the intelligence division during World War II. He was also a retired educator, having served in various positions and at one time served as principal of all the schools in Statesboro.
Upon his retirement from the Bulloch County School System in 1964, he became a professional photographer, at which he remained active until his illness. He was active in various civic and church activities, a former president of Statesboro Lion's Club, and holding several leadership positions in the Statesboro First Baptist Church, of which he was a member.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Thelma P. Adams of Statesboro; two sons, Dr. John Chesley Adams Jr. and Thomas Roberts Adams, both of Statesboro; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Edwina Morris of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mrs. Alice Abernathy of New York, N.Y.; two stepsons, Robert Paul of St. Charles, Mo. and Jack Paul of Huntsville, Ala.; five grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren.
Funeral: 2 p.m. Monday at Statesboro First Baptist Church, burial in East Side Cemetery. Smith-Tillman Mortuary of Statesboro.
