James C. Archer Dies Suddenly at Home
James Cleo Archer, 73, died suddenly on Thursday, May 11th at his home at 301 North Harris St., Sandersville.
Mr. Archer was born Dec. 9, 1893 in Hancock County, son of the late Flavius J. Archer and the late Mrs. Archer, nee Bessie Gheesling.
He was actively engaged in the lumber industry and cattle raising for man years, but a the time of his death he was retired. He was a veteran of World War I.
Funeral services were held for him in the First Baptist Church, of which he was an active member, on Friday, May 12th. at 5 p.m. His pastor the Rev. Marvin C. Ferguson, and the Rev. Dr. Carey Vinzant, a former pastor, new president of Tift College officiated. Interment followed in Brownwood Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Marilu Garner Archer, Sandersville; one daughter, Miss Marilyn Archer, Sandersville; and one sister, Mrs. Elder G. Glenn, Chickamauga.
Active pallbearers were Cecil Hodges, Jr., Edgar Flemister, Cleave Miler, Howard Sheppard, David Holmes, and William Wood.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. N.J. Newsom, Dr. William Rawlings, Dr. William Helton, Dr. Emory Newsome, C.R. Walker, H.L. McCaskill, C. Findlay Irwin, Rap Bennett, Cecil Hodges, Sr., J.B. Wall, W.C. Thomas, Jr., and the deacons of First Baptist Church.
Lang's Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. and Mrs. Archer were devout Baptists and, wanting to see a new Baptist church built, they donated 12 acres of land on which the present First Baptist Church of Sandersville now stands.

NOTE: James' sister, Mrs. Elder Glenn is Dollie Lee Archer Glenn, b. 1894, d. 1963. She was married to Elder Frank Glenn, b. 1885. Dollie is buried at Floyds Chapel Cemetery, Chestnut Bluff, Crockett County, Tennessee, FindAGrave #17794364.
