Harry Giles Adams, 85, died early Sunday (July 30, 2006) morning at the Georgia Veterans Home in Milledgeville (Baldwin Co).
A native of Grifton, N.C., he lived in Pierce County for the last 33 years.
He was retired from the U.S. Army having served during World War II and the Korean conflict and was a Pearl Harbor survivor.
He served as the mayor of Blackshear for 10 years and served on the Blackshear City Council for six years. He was a past president and secretary-treasurer of the Blackshear Rotary Club and served on the Okefenokee Child Abuse Council. Once a week for 22 years he delivered Care and Share meals to shut-ins. He was a very active member of the Blackshear First United Methodist Church having sung in the choir and served on many committees.
He was a son of the late Lonnie Allen Adams, Sr. and Dorothy Bass Adams.
Survivors include his wife of almost 30 years, Ellen Ratliff Adams, of Blackshear; two daughters and a son-in-law, Penelope and Jack Pearson, of Bloomfield, Conn., and Sandra LaChance, of Baltimore, Md.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald G. and Joann Adams, of Southern Pines, N.C. and Jeffery A. and Mary Jo Adams, of Baltimore; one step-daughter, Deborah Walker, of St. Simons Island; one brother-in-law, Alvin (Leigh) Ratliff, of Waycross; one niece, Phyllis (Dr. Robert) Hall, of Moulton, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A funeral will be held Thursday morning at 11 at the First United Methodist Church.
Burial will be in the Blackshear Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Blackshear Rotary Club and should meet at the church by 10:30 Thursday morning. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 127, Blackshear, Ga. 31516.
