James "Dumah" Barnes, age 89, of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2008. He was born September, 11, 1918 in Carroll County, GA to the late Georgia Eason Barnes and James Cotesworth Barnes. Mr. Barnes was a retired diesel mechanic having worked for the Southwire Company. He was a United States Air Force Veteran having served in World War II as an Airman 2nd class in the 13th Air Force and served in New Guinea and the Phillipines. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Phillipine Liberation Medal with Battlestar, and World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Barnes was a member and deacon of Bethesda Baptist Church where he formerly served as church clerk and Sunday school teacher.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Horace, Elgie, Charlie, Arnold and Howard; his sisters, Mae, Annie, Ethel, Grace and Myrtle. Survivors include his wife, Eljein Duke Barnes, his two sons and daughter-in-law, a granddaughter, a sister, and four sisters-in-law.
Funeral service conducted June 25 at Bethesda Baptist Church with Rev. Carlton Rivers and Rev. Stephen Peeples officiating. Nephews serve as pallbearers. Deacons of the church serve as honorary pallbearers. Interment in the church cemetery. Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel of Carrollton has charge of the arrangements.
