Jeannette Adams, 82, formerly of Memphis and LaPlata, MO, passed away among her family and friends at the Macon Health Care Center, Macon, MO, February 28, 2002, after an extended illness.

She was born February 21, 1920, on the Monroe farm south of Memphis, MO, to John Stuart (Tuck) and Mary Aleathia Moyer Monroe.

After graduating from Memphis High School in 1938 as Valedictorian of her class, she attended Kirksville State Teachers College, majoring in English and Physical Education. She was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha and Cardinal Key. She graduated from Kirksville State Teachers College, Suma cum Laude, class of 1941.

Jeannette and William Henry Adams were joined in marriage on May 19, 1942, at the First Presbyterian Church in Tacoma, WA, while he was serving our country during World War II.

Jeannette taught at Canton, MO, Oskaloosa, IA, and Memphis, MO schools. For years, she devoted her time to being a housewife and mother. She joined the First Presbyterian Church of Memphis at the age of 12 and has been a life-long member. She served as an Elder, Historian, President of the Women of the Church, and a member of the Mary Circle. She belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a charter member of the Friendly Neighbors Extension Club.

Her interests included genealogy, dancing, and playing cards with friends and family. She will be remembered for her unselfish disposition and her willingness to always help others.

She is survived by her husband, Henry of LaPlata, MO; one son, William Stuart Adams of LaPlata, MO; one daughter, Jane Ann Adams of Atalissa, IA; three granddaughters, Sonya Beth Adams of Springfield, MO, Rachel Lynn Richardson and husband, Jim of Macon, MO, and Amanda Jo Benge of Cedar Rapids, IA; two great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Hogan and Katelynn Elizabeth Richardson; one sister, Georgianna Martin and her husband, Harold of Mission, TX; one nephew, several nieces and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary Besse Cockrill.

Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church, Memphis, MO, on March 4, 2002, with the Reverend Charles McCracken officiating. Music was provided by Harlo Donelson, soloist, and Connie Courtney, organist. Pallbearers were Roy Monroe, Mark Monroe, Lynn Monroe, Kenneth Monroe, Darrell Monroe, and Rob Monroe. Honorary pallbearers were Millard Becraft, Vic Orf, Earl Craig, Jim Campbell, Dwight DeRosear, and Ted Gundy. Burial was in the Memphis Cemetery. The family has requested that memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Memphis, MO. Arrangements were handled by the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO.
