Birth: Apr. 18, 1919
Death: Feb. 22, 2010

Jesse Russell Cottle, age 90, peacefully flew west Monday morning, Feb. 22.
Russ was born in Fish Haven, Idaho, on April 18th, 1919. He attended high school and college in Logan, Utah, and while at Utah State University he learned to fly airplanes.
From December 1940 to April 1979 he worked for United Airlines, where he flew DC-3s, DC-4s, DC-6s, DC-7s and Convairs (all propeller-driven), and B-720s, DC-8s and B-747s - more modern-day jets. He was based in Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Washington DC, Los Angeles and finished back in San Francisco. His last 20 years were in management, holding the positions of flight manager, chief pilot and eventually as the senior vice president of flight operations for the western division of United.
In 1945 he married the boss' secretary, Jean Thomson. They had four children and were married 58 years until Jean's death in 2003.
Russ was one of the pioneers of whitewater rafting, using WWII assault boats to float down the Green River in 1950. Over the next 50 years, he floated the Snake, South Fork of the Snake, the Salmon, the Middle Fork of the Salmon, the Selway and the Merced - often on weeklong trips. It was not unusual for him to float the Snake River through Jackson Hole three or four times a summer with Jeannie, friends and family.
He loved to play golf, fly-fish and hunt ducks. He also loved the music of the '40s and '50s and has even been known to sing a song or two around the campfire.
He inherited his father's green thumb, and even after macular degeneration robbed him of most of his vision, he loved to putter around in the garden and get after the weeds and fuss over the evening primrose.
After retirement from United, he and Jean spent the summers at Bear Lake and the winters at their home in Atherton, Calif. They traveled extensively, visiting Peru, Chile, New Zealand, China, Afghanistan, India, Africa and Europe.
Russ loved Fish Haven and the Bear Lake area. He served as a director on the Fish Haven Pipeline Co. and was a founder and director of Bear Lake Watch.
Friends and acquaintances were an important part of his life - airline friends, longtime family friends, fishing and hunting friends, river running buddies, potluck and "dirty dozen" friends, and especially his longtime family friend and recent companion, Dorothy Sneddon.
Russ is preceded in death by his wife, Jean; daughter, Bonnie Jean; sister Maureen Wittwer; and grandson, Thomas. He is survived by sons David (Claudia), Robert (Karen) and John (Susan); sister Dorothy (Lu) Campbell, brother, Woody (Phyllis) Cottle; and grandchildren Griffin, Mackenzie, Sarah, Garrett, Bobbie, Brian, Christopher and Dodge.
Dad, father-in-law, uncle, grandpa, good friend - you made the world a much better place. We'll miss you terribly.
There will be a small service for friends and family March 7 in Salt Lake City. There will also be a memorial service this summer in Fish Haven. In lieu of flowers, Dad would rather you help support the place he loved - Bear Lake. Please make any donations to Bear Lake Watch, PO Box 205, St. Charles, Idaho, 83272.
