Velma Ruth Coston was born near Maitland, Missouri on May 26, 1931. She was one of ten children of George Thomas and Leota Jane (Smith) Montgomery.
On March 4, 1950 she married Robert V. Coston in Fort Dodge, Iowa and they became parents of one daughter. They lived in the Maitland before moving to Hugo, Oklahoma.
Robert passed away in 1995 after 45 years of marriage, and Velma moved to Mound City following his death.
Velma worked in restaurants for many years, being an owner herself of a restaurant in Maitland.
Velma passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at an Austin, Texas health care facility at the age of 80.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, James, Thomas, and Steven Montgomery; and sisters, Norma Burns, Gladys Collins, Darlene Hicks, Mae Yeager and Ruby Westcott.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Ruthi and Rex Stevens, Cedar Park, Texas; sister, Wanda and her husband Charles Killin of Oregon, Missouri; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, James and LaVena Loehr, Erma Bilby, Kathryn Coston, and Ernest Westcott; three grandchildren, Robert and wife Christina Propes, Christopher and wife Megan Stevens, and Jessica Stevens; three great grandchildren, Taylor, Cody, and Zachary; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Velma was a member of the Skidmore Christian Church.
Services will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 10:00 am the Chamberlain Funeral Home in Mound City. Family will greet friends one hour prior to services. Interment will be held at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Skidmore, Missouri.
