Eliphas Ellis is the son of James Ellis and Elizabeth Bowen Ellis. He was born in Sumner County, Tenneesse and died at Moniteau County, Missouri. He married Grace Ellis about 1846 in Montgomery County, Missouri.

Eliphas and Gracie Ellis moved to Moniteau County, Missouri in 1890, having purchased 300 acres on the so-called prairie. They purchased 300 acres of land from H.A. and Mollie M. Yarnell on September 6, 1890. They divided this acreage up among their children: Sarah and Frank Hall, Elizabeth and Sam Cunningham, Mary Jane and Zachary Taylor Wilson, John and Elsie (Bussemer) Ellis, and Alonzo and Rose (Porter) Ellis. An agreement was made in 1891, stating, "agreed and understood that A.M. (Alonzo) Ellis would support them for the rest of their natural lives."

On January 11, 1891, Eliphas and Gracy wrote a letter to Frank and Sarah Hall saying, "I payed out your part of the land. You can come on and take the land. Their was 8 dollars interest and I payed the interest to. If you are not going to take it, I want to rent it out. Their will be some fences run through on the line. I like to see you all come. They all think you would be well pleased if you were to come. The rest of the deeds is all fix up. Write soon and let me know. Eliphas Ellis."

Gracy also wrote, "Well, Eliphas, I think if you were up here you could make your living by hunting rabbits. It would be easier than chopping cord wood. Fink at High Point has shipped twelve thousand pounds of rabbits. Well, Sarah, Dave was out Christmas and stayed a few days. He is well as common. If you will come on you can have room here this summer. Write soon. Gracy Ellis." Frank and Sarah Hall didn't move to Moniteau County until 1903.
Eliphas 'Leeper' Ellis died at the age of 77.
