John married Emily in the 1860's in Lincoln County, Missouri. He was from Illinois, and she was a native of Missouri.
John was a farmer, and they lived in Deer Plain, Calhoun County, Illinois. They were the parents of at least 5 children, possibly 6. [See note below.]
Emily died sometime between 1871 and 1900.
Before the turn of the century, John moved to Otter Creek Township, Jersey County, Illinois and lived with his daughter, Lulu, and her family. He worked as a farm laborer at that time.
At the time of his death, John was 66 years, 3 months and 6 days old.
Known children: 1 son, 4 daughters.

"Two small broken pieces of headstone were found 1/2 mile north of the Andrews Cemetery on the opposite side (west side) of the road in a tilled field near the pond. Inscription, 'Johnny. Son of ______ Hobbs.' Parents name is on a missing piece."
