HANCOCK,MARYLAND -- George "Fred" Appel, 62, of Hancock, formerly of Cumberland, died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, at Johns Hopkins University Hospital.

Born Jan. 3, 1936, in Cumberland, he was the son of Leo and Georgie (McFarland) Appel, Cumberland.

He was a 1954 graduate of Fort Hill High School.

Mr. Appel was retired from the U.S. Air Force, where he had been the Chief Flight Steward on Air Force I from 1958 through 1974. He served Presidents Eisenhower through Nixon.

Following his retirement from the Air Force, Mr. Appel and his wife had owned and operated the Appel Tree Inn.

He was a member of the Cumberland Country Club.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Dona Jean (Brown) Appel; five sons, Gary Lee Appel and wife, Nadine, Hancock, Frederick Scott Appel and wife, Denise, Hagerstown, Steven Alan Appel and wife, Maryland, Cumberland, Mark Thomas Appel and wife, Patti, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Kirk Douglas Appel and wife, Sherrie, Hancock; four brothers, Gary Appel and John Appel, both of Cumberland, Harold Appel, Ridgeley, W.Va., and Leo Appel, Cumberland; four sisters, Ina Rae McGregor, Cumberland, Myrtle Gay, Jefferson, Ga., Carolyn Meagher, Cumberland, and Patricia Maddy, LaVale; and 12 grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., corner of Greene and Smallwood streets, Cumberland, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Timothy McGregor officiating.

Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap.

Military honors will be accorded by the combined veterans honor guard.
