Len Kholos, 82, retired managing editor of the Erie Daily Times, died Thursday, May 18, 2006 at Penbrook Memorial Hospital in Florida. Mr. Kholos was born in Pittsburgh on May 3, 1924, son of the late Burke and Bessie Kholos. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.A. in English Literature. He attended Pitt Graduate School. He was a combat veteran of WW II, serving in the United States Army in the European Theater. It was soon after VE Day that he met Suzanne Aviani in Paris. They were married on April 3, 1947 in Pittsburgh. Mr. Kholos came to Erie in 1947 as a reporter for the Erie Dispatch. He was a member of the original staff when the Morning News was founded in January 1947. He purchased the Millcreek Leader in 1959, changing the name of the weekly newspaper to Metropolitan Leader. In 1968, Mr. Kholos was named managing editor of the Erie Times and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1988. He served as president of the Pennsylvania State Newspaper Editors Association and the Managing Editors Association of Pennsylvania. He was a Pulitzer Prize juror in 1978 and 1979. Honors include the Liberty Bell from the Erie County Bar Association. Mr. Kholos was also honored in September 1989 by the University of Pittsburgh as one of the five "Leaders on the Lake," outstanding graduates who chose to live in Erie. Active in Community affairs, Mr. Kholos was chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, and a founding member of the boards of COVE and hospice of Erie County. He was also a member of the boards of the Erie Chapter, American Cancer Society and the Eye and Organ Bank. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Suzanne Kholos; a daughter, Renee Kholos Hanna, and her husband, Dr. Patrick Hanna, of Erie; a son, Kenneth S. Kholos of Hollywood, Fla.; five grandchildren, Brian, Tim, and Kelly Hanna, Eric and Brandon Kholos.
