The Huntsville Times, Huntsville, Alabama Saturday, January 27, 1979: Edwin T. Bates Sr., 75, of Route 1, New Market, died Friday at his home. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the New Market Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery with Laughlin Service Funeral Home in charge. The Rev. Robert Muir will officiate. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Flossie J. Bates; a son, Edwin T. Bates Jr. of Huntsville; three sisters, Mrs. George Jones of Huntsville, Mrs. Annie Rodgers of New Market, Mrs. Dean Baxter of Tucumcari, N. M.; and two grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Edwin Bates III, William H. Bates, W. H. Gray, Patrick Vallely, Orville H. Esslinger and James R. Rodgers. The body will be in the church an hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the New Market Presbyterian Church or to a favorite charity.
