Katherine "Kitty" Barry Baalman, 88, Medford, a former resident of Adel and Fort
Bidwell, died Jan 15, 2004.

Mrs. Baalman was born in Lakeview to Nicholas Patrick and Eolus (Lofftus) Barry.
She was the granddaughter of James Kane Barry of Rockchapel, Newmarket, County
Cork, Ireland, and Katherine O'Connor Barry of San Francisco, who were pioneers
in the Lakeview area, and Christopher Columbus Lofftus of Warner Valley and
Edith Ewell Brown of Fort Bidwell.

James Kane Barry, along with three of his brothers, were instrumental in
bringing most of the original Irish settlers to Lake County, starting in 1877.

She was raised in Adel, attending elementary school there and Lakeview High
School. She was the Lakeview Rodeo Queen in 1933.

She received a bachelor's degree from Southern Oregon State College and a
mster's degree from Syracuse University.

She married Eugene Henry Baalman on June 1, 1941, in Reno.

Mrs. Baalman served on the Governor's Task Force for Special Education and
assisted in the development of the special education program in Oregon.

The majority of her career was spent teaching in the special education program
in the Josephine School District in Grants Pass.

Mrs. Baalman had many hobbies. She was an accomplished horsewoman, an avid
reader, and a writer of stories. She also loved to garden and cook.

Survivors include her son Nicholas A. "Tony" Baalman Sr., of Talent; daughter
Judith Shiron of Portland; grandchildren, Jolinda Baker of Lynnwood, Wash., J.
Richard Baalman of Monroe, Wash., Nicholas Baalman Jr. of Talent, and Michele
Marthaller of Portland; six great-grandchildren; sisters Nellie Jane Barry
Herringer of Clarksburg, Calif., and Betty Barry Fletcher of Spokane, Wash; and
numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by sisters Ruth Eolus
Barry Cox and Edith Barry and brothers Robert James Barry, Nicholas Lofftus
Barry, and Franklin Duane Barry.
