BEREL - In this city, November 13, Jacob Berel, aged 71 yrs, two months and 16 days.
Jacob Berel was naturalized in New York City, New York in Common Pleas Court on Sept. 1, 1852. He was living at 254 William St, N.Y. City. His witness was Simon Rosenthal who lived at 14 Division St. N. Y. City. He arrived in the U.S. around 1847-48. Jacob and his brother, Rino Berel, ran a fancy goods and perfumery store at 43 Beckman St. in New York City in 1850-51. In 1852 they were located at 186 Stanton. Next he was located at 266 Walker St. from 1853 to 1855 and dealt in perfumery and bitters. He and family then located to San Francisco, California. His brother, Rino, was there in 1854, which was one year ahead of Jacob and family. Jacob was dealing in furniture from 1858 to 1869. He then was dealing in second hand clothing from 1870 to 1883. He then was a merchant until 1883. From 1883 until his death in 1889 he was a sexton in the Jewish Church. At his death he was living at 1416 Powell St., San Francisco, Ca. He was 73 years of age and his obit notice was in the San Francisco Call paper. He is buried at the Eternal Home Cemetery in Colma, California. His headstone is written in Hebrew and English.
