Captain Andrew Bertrand Beauvais passed away on a Wednesday at his home in Columbia following an illness of six days.

Captain Beauvais was born July 20, 1827, (not 1825 as the headstone says) in South Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, to Frenchman, Andrew Beauvais and Patience Ricketson whom his father married in 1823.

Captain Beauvais' father had previously been married to Rhoda Ricketson, whom he married in 1818, but she passed away in 1820. She was Patience's older sister.

Patience passed away September 10, 1831, in Halletts Cove, Long Island, New York, and his father married Alice Howland Sherman on February 14, 1834.

Captain Beauvais followed his father's footsteps by becoming a sailor, but then he traded the sea for land by moving to Columbia in the quest for gold.

His sister was Catharine M, and his brother was Joseph Arthur. His half-siblings included Ann H., James R., Jireh S., Thomas E., and Wanton H.

On November 29, 1863, Andrew married Lavinia Dow Andrews in Columbia.

Mr. Beauvais was an old and respected gentleman of Tuolumne County, having been elected several times for county surveyor. He also was a member of the last State Legislature from Tuolumne County and Calaveras County.

The Captain was well liked and admired by all who knew him. He enjoyed a wide circle of friends.

His widow and two daughters, Addie L. and Kathryn "Katie" R., were in receipt of the sympathy of the community.

His daughter, Kathryn, married LeRoy Tyron, and had four children, Lloyd, Helen, Treva and Norma. She passed away in Calaveras County on December 22, 1943, at the age of 66.

Captain Beauvais' wife, Lavinia Dow Andrews, was born August 24, 1843 in Corinna, Maine. Her father was from France, and her mother was from Massachusetts.

Lavinia Dow Andrews Beauvais had a younger sister, Addie, who lived with her and Andrew in Columbia. Lavinia passed away April 23, 1900, in Valencia, California.

The couple had four children. Their children were:

(1) Arthur Clark Beauvais. Arthur was born August 1864 in Columbia and passed away February 1868 in Columbia. He was three years old.

(2) Andrew Bertrand Beauvais. Andrew was born June 27, 1866 in Columbia and passed away September 1867 in Columbia. He was a year old.

(3) Andrienne Louise Beauvais. Andrienne was born June 23, 1872 in Columbia. Her nickname was Addie.

(4) Kathryn Rebecca Beauvais. Kathryn was born October 10, 1877 in Columbia. Her nickname was Kate when she was older and Katie when she was small. As a young woman, Kate boarded in Oakland at the home of Mary Conaway. Eventually she married Charles W. Tryon, and they lived in Angels Camp. Their children were Lloyd, Helen, Treva and Norma. Kathryn passed away in Calaveras County December 22, 1943 at the age of 66.

Remembering Andrew on the anniversary of his passing. Not sure about some of the "facts" presented here, but it's a lovely "story".....

Remembering Andrew, a distant relation of my Mother's BAKER clan. Rest in Peace, Andrew, that you are remembered and linked to your family from Massachusetts once again.
