Aunt Mandy or Lucy and her husband either belonged to (as slaves), or worked for, William W. Hale. It is said that she and her husband may have been the first freed blacks to travel across the plains with a wagon train to Northern California.
Aunt Mandy/Lucy and her husband did not live long after their journey. They died in Lake County, California, about 1855. They are buried together. (Mauldin History)
