The following was written by Charles' niece:

In Memory of C. N. Atherton

The Angel of Death has entered into the peaceful home of Isaac Atherton and took from him his brother, C. N. Atherton, who, for the past two years, has been out from Maine on a visit. He left his home June 13, 1887, and started for California for the purpose of spending a short time with his brother.

He was a man of good principle and always greeted everyone with a smile and had a pleasant word for all. He has left a wife and eight children in that far off State who will sadly regret to hear of his sudden death. When he left his home he started with the intention of returning in a year or two. But as it was God's will to take him from us, we hope that we shall meet him in heaven. It is the Lord that giveth and the Lord that taketh away.

As a man his life has been rarely and radiantly beautiful. To his relations and friends he was always kind and ready to lend a helping hand. He was always distiguished by a sweet courtesy, by a beautiful unselfishness, by great kindliness of spirit and magnanimity of heart. He adorned the doctrine of God, his Saviour, in all things. He has gone from us and we shall see sweet face no more, but his memory will be cherished by us all in time to come.

To his beloved family we extend our heartfelt sympathy. We weep with them in their sorrow, which is our sorrow, too. Casting loving looks behind, he gently passed away where the greeting is tearless and the reunion is unbroken.

Farewell, our loved one, farewell, forever,
The voice we loved is hushed and still;
A space is vacant in our hearts,
Which we can never fill.
How can I think thou art indeed no more,
When looking at thee so well, so bright,
That thou hast crossed the golden shore,
Where all is joy and light.
Would I call him back from heaven;
I, who have known life's pain?
When I think of home and happiness,
Where the dear Saviour reigns.
No, in the beautiful Eden above,
He is so safe from care,
and I shall go to those realms of love
Someday and meet him there.
--A Niece
Jeffersonville, March 23.

Charles N. Atherton was born to parents Joshua Atherton and Phoebe Hall on September 4, 1828 in Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada. He passed away in California, and his body was handled by Burden Mortuary in Sonora, California. He was interned in the Columbia cemetery in Columbia, California. He was visiting his siblings in the Rawhide/Jeffersonville area when he passed away. His wife, Margaret, is listed in the 1900 and 1910 census as widowed and still living in Hodgdon, Aroostock County, Maine. She had come to the United States from New Brunswick, Canada. She gave birth to nine children. Five were alive in 1900 and in 1910.

The following is the story of some of the Atherton family members who lived in Tuolumne County.

About Charles N. Atherton's Brother's Family:
Isaac Atherton was born in 1834 in New Brunswick. Both of his parents were born in New Brunswick, Canada.

Sarah Atherton was the wife of Isaac Atherton. She was born in Pennsylvania, and her parents were born in England. She was born in February 1840.

Isaac came to California, and in 1860, lived in Shaws Flat area, located between Sonora and Columbia. He lived as a single man boarding with two others from Maine, T. A. and J. A. Hale. The three men were miners.

Isaac and Sarah married in 1862. They had been married for 38 years when Isaac passed away.

By 1870, Isaac and Sarah had begun to raise their family, and were living in Chinese Camp where Isaac was a miner. Their children were S. J. (daughter), Charles A. who was born May 1865, Rachel A. who was born March 1867, George, and by 1880, Emma and Frank, who was born January 1880. All their children were born in California. They had a total of seven children, but they lost one.

Issac passed away in early 1900. Charles, Rachel and Frank remained living with their mother, all being single, and Charles and Frank worked as miners.

Frank married a lady named Jesse, and they had a daughter, Verna. They lived in Jamestown.

Charles remained single, lived alone in the Rawhide area (near Jamestown), and continued his career as a gold miner.

Charles Atherton passed away in Tuolumne County on May 2, 1937 at the age of 71. Unfortunately I did not find an obituary for him in the Sonora newspaper.
