Columbia native Mary Elizabeth Alexander, 80, passed away on a Sunday at her Angels Camp home.
Mrs. Alexander was the daughter of Joseph Souza and Mary Adeline Pereira Azevedo Souza and grew up in Columbia near the marble quarry.
She had lived in Calaveras county since 1929, 40 years in which she lived on Carson Hill in a white house near the highway. She moved to Angels Camp in the 1970s to live with her daughter.
Mrs. Alexander was survived by a son, Arthur Alexander of Murphys; three daughters, Marie Starr of Angels Camp, Adeline Frye of Salem, Oregon, and Florence Kahn of Van Nuys; 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jobe Alexander, and her first child, eight day old Adeline C. Alexander, in 1921, and a newborn son in 1928 who was the twin of her youngest daughter.
The first born of Mary and Jobe Alexander rests in St. Anne's Catholic Cemetery in Columbia, the stone reading A C Alexander. The stone was covered by a mudslide in that cemetery between 2000 and 2010.
The June 11, 1921 edition of the Union Democrate states: "A daughter was born in Sonora, June 7th, to the wife of Jobe Alexander of Columbia.
The June 18, 1921 edition of the Union Democrat states: "The 8 day old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jobe Alexander died in Sonora Wednesday." (June 15, 1921)
The child was buried in the Columbia Public Cemetery by undertaker Burden. State File #25607.
The baby's name was Adeline.
