Billy Boyle drowns in Zeballos River
William Boyle aged about 35 an employee of A.W. Ford & Co. drowned last Tuesday morning near the Standard Oil dock. Following an inquiry by Coroner Whilans, the funeral was held Thursday afternoon. Rev. Father J.W. Tunner officiated. Burial was in Zeballos Cemetery on Prosperity Trail. Pall Bearers were Edward Murphy, Uno Berg, Von Proctor, Roy F. Coswan, Clifford H. Leffler and Alvin Askeland. A large wreath bearing the inscription 'From the gang' was placed on the grave A.W. Ford. How the accident happened was not ascertained. Boyle had been trimming a boom of logs from the jam in Zeballos River, a few hundred yards up from the mouth. The last seen of him, he was working on the boom. Shortly afterwards, he had disappeared. Investigation revealed the body near the Standard Oil dock. Coroner Whilans declared the drowning to be accidental. Although "Little Billy" as Boyle was known, was a strong swimmer, there was no evidence, the Coroner said, that he had struck his head and been rendered unconscious. It is presumed he had been weighted down by heavy shoes and clothing. A large crowd at the funeral testified to the popularity of Little Billy in Zeballos. He had been employed by A.W. Ford here and at Parksville for nearly seven years. Nothing is known of his relatives. Prior to arriving in Parksville he had lived several years in the northern part of the province.
