Husband of Ann Godby
Died Sept. 22, 1859, aged 54 yrs, 3 mos, 4 days
Wife: Ann Allsted (1813-?)
12 children: Nancy 1830, Dryden 1832, Tolbert 1834, French 1836, Nash 1838, Anderson 1840, Obediah 1843, William C. 1846, Blackburn 1849, John C. 1854, Polly Ann 1854.
William was born in 1805 in Virginia to William Godby (1776-?) and Nancy Dickerson (?-1830). His brother Russell Godby (1800-1888) of Greenview was a well-known early settler of Mason County, who came in 1829 in a covered wagon. Russell was said to be a good friend of Abraham Lincoln.
William married Ann in Logan County, Virginia, in 1831. They were still there in the 1850 Census, but must have come to Illinois soon after that.
Why he is buried in Dimond Cemetery is not known. Perhaps he just lived nearby, or maybe as a native of Virginia like Jesse was an old friend. His son Dryden (1832-1860) and wife Eliza Pelham Godby (1837-1860) are buried across the road in Pelham Cemetery.
