W. Douglas "Doug" Bergman, passed away May 14, 2012, after a courageous, six month battle with renal cancer. His wife of 30 years, Deborah "Debbe" Wick Bergman was at his side as well as his beloved Labradors Dubya and Riley.
Doug was born January 27, 1950 at Grant Hospital in Columbus, OH.
A 1968 graduate of Columbus Walnut Ridge High School, Doug received his Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1972 from The Ohio State University followed by his Master's Degree in History, also from The Ohio State University, in June 1973. After graduation he taught history at Walnut Springs Junior/ Senior High School in Westerville, OH and was an active member at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Columbus, OH for 18 years.
Doug moved to San Diego in 1973 and continued to remain a loyal supporter of the Alumni Association of The Ohio State University. Doug was also a member of the San Diego Yacht Club and the San Diego Country Club. Doug went to work for Liberty Mutual Insurance in 1973 and managed Liberty Mutual's first satellite office in Encinitas, CA and in 1990 opened a branch office El Cajon where he worked for 18 years.
Doug retired in October 2009 after 36 years with Liberty Mutual. Doug and Debbe were married on November 26, 1982 at All Soul's Episcopal Church in Point Loma. During their marriage, Doug and Debbe traveled extensively abroad and throughout the United States, oftentimes traveling with Doug's in-laws Hope and George Wick.
A favorite destination was the south of France but as a history major, Doug took particular pleasure in trips to Great Britain. After 9/11 Doug and Debbe made numerous trips to New York. Doug was diagnosed with renal cancer in November 2011 and enjoyed a steady stream of friends visiting with him at his home. These numerous visits to Doug were confirmation of his steadfast loyalty to his friends. Doug always greeted his friends and visitors with grace, bravery, strength and dignity. These visits, no matter how Doug was feeling, were filled with laughter for there was much laughter that Doug brought to the lives of all who knew him.
It is an understatement to say that Doug was a passionate follower of his Big Ten Champions, THE Ohio State Buckeyes. But Doug wasn't just obsessive about football. His love of life and his laugh were infectious. He could quote lines from every movie he had ever seen and there were thousands. With Doug's insane memory, every sport's statistic was at his fingertips backed by his 50 year complete collection of Sports Illustrated. His vast knowledge of politics, American History, sports and entertainment was legendary. Two of Doug's favorite pastimes were Wednesday night beer can races at the SDYC and enjoying the 19th hole after golfing with his friends at the San Diego Country Club. But his friends captured the essence of Doug best through the many emails that arrived at his home every day. Friends and family treasured Doug's advice to "always honor your first commitment and handwrite thank you notes for acts of kindness". And there were many who noted how Doug had mentored them in the workplace and always given them the tools they needed to succeed in business.
He was preceded in death by his parents Anne and William Bergman of Chillicothe and Columbus, Ohio, and his brother Craig Bergman of Annapolis, Maryland.
A celebration of Doug's life will be held at All Soul's Episcopal Church, 1475 Catalina Boulevard on May 25, 2012 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Soul's Episcopal Church.
