Charles was born in St Mary's Co, MD and was brought to Washington Co, KY by his mother Betsy Alvey about 1806. After Charles' father had died and later his grandfather, Jesse Alvey, died in 1803, Charles was bound out to learn a trade in 1803 the custom at the time. His mother by 1805 decided to bring Charles and his three siblings, James, Jr (my GGG GF), Philip and Catherine to Kentucky. She was accompanied to Kentucky by her brother-in-law, John Henry Alvey, and his family and both were in seperate households by the 1810 Washington Co, KY census. Jesse Alvey's other son, Benedict Alvey had left Maryland for Kentucky by 1790 with his wife Mary and two children, Henry and Susannah Alvey (my GGG GM).

Many have confused the father of Charles as being the son of John Henry Alvey, but Jesse Alvey's will of 1803 names Charles as his grandson and he names his grandson, James. Since John and Benedict were living in 1803, their children were not mentioned in the will. Also the fact that Charles was bound out to learn a trade would indicate his father had died before Jesse Alvey. John and Benedict Alvey were also mentioned in his will as his sons.

Charles married twice, first to Elizabeth Ann Martin, daughter of Samuel Lee Martin and Mary "Polly" Leake and they had two sons, James Quinn and James Madison. Quinn moved to Indiana, then on to Texas where he died. Madison moved to Union Co, KY where he married three times and had at least 8 children. Elizabeth died shortly after the birth of the second son, but we do not know exactly when or where, or where she was buried. After Elizabeth's death Charles married Mary Elizabeth "Betsy" Ray, daughter of Absalom Ray, Sr and Susannah Mattingly. Charles and Betsy married on September 8, 1817 at Washington Co, KY. Charles and Betsy had 13 children; some stayed in Marion Co, KY, and some moved to the western part of the state in Union Co, KY.

On December 14, 2009, I was sent a Union Co, KY Death Register for the year 1855 by Linda Delahanty Schrader of Louisville, KY. That death register include a Charles Alvey, age 70, married and born in MD, died in October 1855 of Congestion of the Brain. no parents were listed. It is still my belief that Charles was brought to St Mary, Marion Co, KY for burial in St Charles Catholic Cemetery. His wife died in 1863 and she is buried in St Charles. Many of the children of Charles Alvey and Mary Elizabeth Ray had moved to Union Co, KY so Charles was likely visiting rather than having moved to Union Co. Charles was listed on the 1855 Marion Co, KY tax lists which would imply he still lived and owned property in Marion Co, KY.

But to further explain, it is not absolutely known for certain that Charles or either of his two wives are buried in St Charles. He could be in one of the Catholic cemeteries in Union Co, KY.
