Nellanne Martin Doty died suddenly and quietly on June 16, 2012 after suffering a brain hemorrhage. Her life was an amazing gift to all who knew her.
Nellanne grew up in Trinity and Humboldt Counties. Both of her parents were born in Zenia where their parents had homesteaded. Nellanne went to Eureka High School and then to Humboldt State where she received her Bachelor degree in English, minor in Art as well as her teaching credential.
She was hardworking, dedicated, intelligent, and compassionate. She taught AP English classes at Soquel High School and then ran an all boy high school within the Juvenile Correction System of Santa Clara County. She received a master's degree in family counseling from Santa Clara University so that she could better help her troubled teens. Her "boys" were all offenders and diagnosed with both addiction and mental health challenges. Her work was applauded by peers, supervisors and students. During this time Nellanne gave birth to her amazing daughter, Liz, whom she adored and championed for twenty-seven years.
After she returned to Humboldt County she taught at East High School, a Continuation High School in Fortuna. She increased the number of their students enrolled at College of the Redwoods. She significantly raised the scores of her students in state wide testing. She won teacher of the year in her regional association of Continuation High Schools. Nellanne will be remembered for more than her achievements. She was a source of kindness, courage, and wisdom to the people who knew her. She was a quiet and gentle warrior for those who were often left out, neglected, and wounded. She shunned the limelight but shined with grace. Nellanne was a dedicated and dependable Christian, with an enduring hunger for the gentle and healing spirit of Jesus. She will be deeply missed by many people.
Nellanne met Tim Doty in August, 1997 through a surprise encounter at a church board meeting. The relationship grew in a dance of words, revealing delight, and affection for each other. They married in January, 1999, with their daughters as the best attendants giving their parent to the other. Their marriage was a gift of healing and laughter for Nellanne and Tim. Their marriage gave each other new life. Nellanne is survived by husband, Tim and daughter, Elizabeth Paterson. Her brother, Tom Martin lives in Eureka with his wife, Aileen. Their children are Sarah, Rebekah, and Jennie.
Nellanne has many cousins from her mother's large family, the Burgess clan of Trinity County. She has a grandniece and grandnephew in Japan, a grandniece in Sacramento, and two granddaughters in San Jose who call her "YaYa." Nellanne embraced Tim's two daughters, Meghan Doty and Erin Stephen.
A memorial service for Nellanne will be held at the Arcata Presbyterian Church on September 15 at 2 pm. This will be followed by a private, graveside service at the family cemetery in Zenia.
