Leonard F. Banning
Served on area school boards
Ashland- Leonard E. Banning, 89, of 1720 Center St., died Saturday, June 4 at the Ashland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Mount Carmel, he was the son of the Aaron and Emma (Lempke) Banning.
Mr. Banning was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Ashland, where he served on the church council and was a Sunday school teacher. He was previously employed by the Reading Company where he was captain of the Locust Summit First Aid team which won numerous awards, including a state championship. He was last employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor as a state inspector until his retirement.
He served as director of the former Ashland and present North Schuylkill School districts for 30 years. He was also a member of Ashland Boys Association Home Staff, Glee Club and famous "End Men". He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Union and an active member of the Republican party.
He was preceded in death, by his first wife, the former Mamie Snyder, in 1942, and a son and a daughter.
Survivors include his wife, the former Mabel Rubright, with whom he would have been married 50 years on July 5; two daughters, Jean Brown and Shirley Klinger, both of Ashland; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
