Jacob Clerk, a native of London, married Margaret Russell Lee, a granddaughter of Squire Richard Lee of nearby Blenheim. In 1803, at the request of Eleanor Ann Lee, eldest surviving daughter of Squire Lee, they were granted the right to change the name Clerk to Clerklee, and because there were no surviving male heirs to continue the Lee name in this branch of the illustrious Virginia family, the right to bear the coat-of-arms and armorial bearings of the Lee family.
