William Ernest "Bill" Backer Jr., 85, of Fulton, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2008 at Callaway Community Hospital in Fulton, Missouri.
Bill was born December 3, 1922 in Fulton, the first child of the late William Earnest "Fritz" Backer and Ida Loraine(Smith) Backer. Fritz was born in Fulton and Ida in Illinois. On December 25, 1943, he married Marjorie Keller at his parents home near New Bloomfield. She preceeded him in death on December 9, 2003.
He is survived by one son, William "Dale" (Myrna Kay)Backer of Fulton, two daughters, Vicki Lynn McDaniel of Fulton and Carolyn Sue Cave of Hadley, Massachusetts, one sister, Jean Danusor of Fulton, four grandchildren, Sara Barber, Lauren Herder, Melissa Milius and John McDonald.
He was preceeded in death by his parents, his wife and one brother.
Bill graduated from Westminister College with a major in Chemistry.
Bill owned and operated Backers Potato Chip Company and Factory and Auto World Museum. He enjoys a hobby of antique and vintage cars and currently has eighteen collector cars.
Bill was chairman of Fulton Planning and Zoning Commission. He was a past president and current member of the Kiwanis Club, A past president and current member of the Chamber of Commerce and he was the oldest active trustee of Westminister College.
Bill volunteered his help with the Girl Scouts and the Boy Scouts. He was honored as a Distinguished Eagle Scout.
Bill was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fulton.
Bill holds a patent pertaining to Air Force armament and spent two years as a United States Naval Officer with Radar Specialty in World War 11.
Bill was heavily involved with saving the railroad spur from Mexico to Fulton.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at Fulton Presbyterian Church in Fulton with Dr. Jennifer Tunick officiating. Entombment with full Military Honors will follow at Callaway Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Family will recieve friends on Tuesday evening from 5-7PM at Debo Funeral Home in Fulton.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Auto World Museum Fondation.
