Sophie was born in Kustyn, a small village about 6 km(4 miles) north of Lopatyn in the then Ukraine. Prior to WWII it had about 1,000 inhabitants, including 900 Ukrainians, 20 Poles and 80 Jews. Sophie lived 13 miles north of Athabasca, Alberta with her family. When she became 17 or 18 she moved to Edmonton, Alberta where she met Joseph John Grochowski Sr., a US Army solider. Sophie was residing at 10546-98th St., Coolidge, Alberta, Canada in 1943. To this union Joseph Jr was born in July 1944 and while living in Chicago Barbara Jane Grochowski Beacham came along in May 1946.

Sophie lived at with Joe's mother at 1420 W Blackhawk St, Chicago, IL for a short time in 1945, while Joe was being discharged from the Army. She entered the United States via Canadian National Railway train at Noyes, MN on Jan 24, 1945.

After his discharge from service, Joe and Sophie were en route to northern Michigan when the bus they were riding, stopped to pick up passengers in South Haven, Michigan. Both immediately liked the area so much they bought a small farm there at RR#3, box 720 (Hwy M-43), South Haven, Michigan, in 1946 or 1947. Sophie and Joe continued to live there with their two children. Sophie was forced to sell it after Joes death. After Joes death, Sophie took a job as a waitress at Midway Airport and she lived on Keating Ave across from the airport. She boarded out Joseph and Barbara with Mrs. Mary Gates. (referred to as Grandma Gates). She was a lovely lady who lived on the corner of Huron and Indiana St. in South Haven. The Senior Citizens housing now occupies this lot. Sophie worked during the week in Chicago and would return on the weekends to be with her 2 children.

In 1949 she was living at 6125 S. Keating Ave., Chicago, IL. It was located across the street from O'Hare Airport. She had met a Northwest airlines pilot named Daniel Martin Gee and married him(this is questionable and has never been proven). She gave birth to Patricia Marie Gee in November 1949. Their marriage(?) was short lived. She soon left him and permanently returned to South Haven where she bought a house at 231 Huron St. The house was originally a boarding house for sailors and had a bar in the basement called the "Old Crow". The house was sold following her death and was totally renovated and is now a "lake resort house" overlooking the Black river in South Haven.

In 1953 Sophie became a naturalized US Citizen. USA Certificate of Naturalization # 704561, petition No 1012, dated November 16, 1953 in the County of Van Buren, State of Michigan. She is listed as fair complexion with brown hair & eyes, weight 130 lbs. and having a scar on right elbow. She was married and was a citizen of Canada.

At this time in 1953 she met and wed Edward Walle, Sr and of this union she bore Edward August Walle Jr of near Pullman, MI and Katherine Ann Walle Hauck of Wainwright, Alberta.
