ABILA, Pauline C.
Surrounded by her loving family, Pauline died just after midnight on March 3, 2006 at the UC Davis Medical Center. She was 92.
Born Maria Carmen Paulita Torres in Trinidad, Colorado on April 26, 1913, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Francisco (Frank); a son, Bob Abila and a daughter, Frances Solorio.
She is survived by daughters, Fidelia Torres-Hernandez & Edna Hernandez; a son, Orlando (Ray) Abila; a sister, Martha Gonzales of Colorado; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Pauline arrived in California during the early years of WWII where her husband worked in the Richmond Shipyards. Pauline worked for many years at the Bercut-Richards and Libby Canneries in Sacramento.
While she was able, she was very active in the First Mexican-Baptist Church in Sacramento, organizing and participating in social functions and singing in the choir.
An important part of her life was the loving and caring for her family. Pauline was "Mom" to her granddaughter, Berta Gonzales-Cable, raising her, seeing her through school into college and a career.
In the last years of her full and rich life, Pauline lived with and was cared for by Berta and her husband Dick. The love and support provided by Eleanor Soto, Pauline Gee, Lisa Delgado, Tabitha Slingerland, Petra Abila, Cristobal, Adrian and Juan Torres and others among her special grandchildren made her last years a fulfilling family experience for all.
This wonderful and courageous woman will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
