Vihtori Mäkelä was born in Haavisto, Ruotsinpyhtää, Finland on the 23rd of April 1881 as the first child of Taavi and Eeva Sofia Mäkelä. His parents where both from landless families and the Mäkelä's were a working class family with the struggle with their income.
Vihtori had six younger siblings, five of which lived to adulthood (even though his only brother Matti Mäkelä died at the age of 19 in 1904). Like his father Taavi, Vihtori was a talented carpenter even though he started as shoemaker student.
Vihtori met his wife Ida Sofia Vesalainen, who was originally from Mäntyharju, Southern Savonia, in Raussila, Elimäki where Ida was a maid in the Pörkki household and Vihtori worked as a hired man in the Matinsyli household. The couple was wedded on the 13th of November 1904 and they got six children.
Vihtori built at least two small cottages for his family during his life. The first one he sold to Eemeli Ruohola and in the second one he lived the rest of his life. His wife Ida died of stomach ailment in 1953 and widoved Vihtori continued to live in Haavisto with his second eldest daughter Maija.
Vihtori Mäkelä died on his birthday, the 23rd of April 1968 at the age of 87. He was buried next to his wife at the Haavisto Cemetery, Pyhtää, Kymenlaakso, Finland.
