Lempi Tuomisalo (neé Mäkelä) was born on the 28th of August 1914 in Haavisto, Ruotsinpyhtää, Uusimaa, Finland to Vihtori and Ida Sofia Mäkelä. She had four elder siblings, two brothers and two sisters and one younger brother born in 1920.
During the Finnish Civil War in 1918 her parents suported the Reds and because of that they couldn't really work at any place after the war. Besides that they didn't have a farm of their own and lived just in a small wooden cabin build by Lempi's father and grandfather. The cabin had just one room and a kitchen and at best times there would live over ten individuals, the siblings of Lempi, her parents and grandparents. It is quite understandable that Lempi started working at young age and employed herself as a maid in the village of Haavisto.
She met her forthcoming husband Eino August Tuomisalo at the school of Haavisto and they engaged on the 5th of February 1938 and married few few months later on the 16th of April 1938. Eino had been raised by his grandparents and in the late 1930's he redeemed the estate of his grandparents back to himself and started farming. When the Second World War broke out Eino was forced to fight in the front but he survived the war with few wounds.
Lempi and Eino Tuomisalo got eight children, four daughters and four sons, three of which were born during the World War. Their first daughter was born dead in 1939.
Lempi's husband Eino August described her in his memorial being "irrespressible and feisty, yet kind-hearted and loving wife". He writes that they didn't have almost any arguments during their marriage and that even though Lempi sometimes bosses him around she has been the best wife Eino could have imagined.
Lempi was also very good with cooking and handicrafts and she loved to sing. In many ways she was kind of the "traditional grandmother" yet somewhat angular and that gave her the memorable character.
Her last years Lempi lived in a rest home in Tesjoki, Ruotsinpyhtää because she suffered from dementia. Lempi Tuomisalo died peacefully in the rest home on the 13th of January 2010 at the age of 95. She was buried beside her husband at the Haavisto Cemetery and is greatly missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with their families.
