Joseph William Gensaw Sr., a Yurok Tribal member, passed away with his family at his side at St. Joseph Hospital on Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at the age of 48. Joseph was born November 15, 1962, in Crescent City.
Joseph was preceded in death by his father Oscar Gensaw Sr, mother Josephine Gensaw and brother Kenneth Charles.
He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 20 years, Joyce Gensaw of Klamath, sons, Joseph Gensaw Jr. and wife Angie of Klamath, Justin Gensaw and Joshua Gensaw of Klamath, daughters Jolene Gensaw of Crescent City, Janell Gensaw of Kentucky, sister Peggy Sue Gensaw of Eureka, brother Curtis Gensaw and Sherel Bostwick of Klamath; grandchildren Joseph III, Taylor, Lita, Matthew and Andrew; nephews and nieces Oscar III and fiancé Georgiana, James and wife Angela, Jasmine, Magnolia and husband Nathan, Camelia and husband Michael, William, Charles and Teresita.
As a youth, Joseph boxed on his father's boxing team (Gensaw Boxing Club) along with his brother Curt. They traveled as a family all over the Northwestern states and Canada competing. Joe, as a teenager, boxed in the 119 weight class.
The family will hold services at the family plot on Requa on Monday, January 24, at 10 a.m. Following the services, please join us at the Yurok Tribal Office for a time of fellowship in remembrance of Joseph Gensaw Sr., at noon.
