Robert Austin Alexander Junior joined the Marine Corps April 1942 from Davenport Iowa. In 1943 after commissioning and flight school he went overseas in June 1943. Assigned Marine Fighter Squadron 214 (VMF 214)as a replacement pilot at Banika Air Strip in the Russell Islands. His Squadron VMF 214 became infamous as the "Black Sheep" squadron with "Pappy Boyington" and a 1970's TV show.
23 September 1943 on a Air Mission from Banika he lost an engine and crash landed Vella la Vella Air Strip. 30 September 1943 Killed on Air Mission from Munda, New Georgia shot down by PT Boat. Crashed Kolombanga Island.
Next of Kin: Parents; Mr Robert A and Mrs Johann Alexander, 229 Hillcrest Avenue, Davenport, Iowa.
Initially buried on Kolombangara, in the Solomon Islands, then processed for repatriation at USAF Mausoleum, Manila # 1.
1948 returned to US for permanent burial in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery, Davenport, Iowa.
