Jacob Cooper, age 18, appears in the 1860 U.S. Census of Dyer Township, Saline County, Arkansas, in the household of William Cooper, age 44, and his wife Mirah Cooper.

He was a Confederate Soldier/Veteran who served in Company A, 2nd Battalion Arkansas Infantry. He enlisted 17 September 1861, at Hot Springs as a Private. He served until wounded and was transferred to the 3rd Regiment Arkansas Infantry at Camp Lee near Petersburg, VA on 18 July 1862. He was wounded at Mechanicsville and had his left arm amputated. His Certificate of Disability, dated 6 August 1862, indicated he was 21 years of age, six feet, two inches tall, light complexion, gray eyes, and dark hair. The certifying officer found him "... incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of the loss of his left arm at the Battle of Mechanicsville." He would have to live with this loss the remaining 40 years of his life.

Jacob M. Cooper, age 30, of Dyer, Saline County, Arkansas married Eliza Jane Guerin, age 22, of Dyer Saline County, Arkansas on 18 March 1875, in Saline County, Arkansas and to that union, ten children were born.

Jacob M. Cooper was shown on the 1900 U.S. Census of Dyer Township, Saline County, Arkansas as age 59, born in Arkansas and head of house. His wife Eliza J. Cooper and ten children were listed with him on this census.

Jacob M. Cooper applied for an Arkansas Confederate pension (awarded #01080) in 1891, from Saline County, due to his wounds and amputation. On April 1, 1861, with the passage of Act 91, Arkansas became one of the first southern states to grant annual pensions to ex-Confederate servicemen and their widows. Jacob was one of the first Confederate Veterans to receive a pension, because of the loss of his arm. His widow, Jane Cooper, applied for widow's pension #10762, 12 August 1905, also from Saline County.
