Bernard R. "Bernie" Borland, Jr., was the son of World War I US Navy veteran Bernard R. Boland, Sr and Frances Fern "Fran" Roberts.

The 1930 US Census shows the family as living in Chicago Heights, Cook County, Illinois. His father was an "Acid Maker" in a fertilizer company. The following family members are shown as living in the home:

Kathleen Boland Dau F 6 North Carolina

The 1940 US Census shows the family is still living in their home in Chicago Heights and his father has continued to work in the fertilizer plant. The family is ten years older but no changes to the home:

During World War II Bernie answered his Nation's call to arms and joined the United States Navy on 9/9/1942. By January 1943 he had completed his boot camp training at the United States Naval Training Station, Great Lakes, Illinois,as well as having attended field medical training and was awarded the title of Pharmacist Mate, a Navy Corpsman. He was assigned to the be a Corpsman of Marines and the most significant unit he was assigned was the 3rd Defense Battalion, 3rd Marine Division and reported for duty in San Diego, California. Soon the division was sent into combat duty in the South Pacific and Bernie was assigned to the 3rd Defense Battalion at Bougainville, Solomon Islands.

At the time of his death, Bernie was living in Ft Meyers, Lee county, Florida. He was 37 years old.
