On Tuesday, May 13, 2008, Lawrence "Larry" Lewis Cone, a remarkable man, slipped peacefully from this Earth. His final days were spent surrounded by family, neighbors and many people he had touched with his humble, resilient spirit.

Larry was born in May 1921 in Spokane, Wash. Shortly after contracting the polio virus at age of 6, his family moved to California, settling in Compton where he attended grade school all the way through Compton City College. He graduated from the University of the Pacific in 1947 with a degree in sociology. Shortly after college he became a realtor and kept his license active for the remainder of his life. He lived in Visalia for nearly 30 years, and worked for the Tulare County welfare department, and served two terms as president of the Tulare County Employee's Association. He retired in the mid-1970s and moved to rural Arroyo Grande, where he resumed his real estate career. He and his wife, Josefina, eventually subdivided their 20 acres on Halcyon Road. The resulting neighborhood was a source of pride and accomplishment for him.

Larry moved to Paso Robles in 1998 to be closer to his grandchildren. For years, he could be seen in his wheelchair at ballgames, concerts, plays and graduations. His grandkids were a huge source of pride for him. They, in turn were forever affected by his kindness, perseverance and loving heart.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Norm and Esther; five grandchildren, Brooke, Jesse and wife Kelly, Autumn, David and Emily; great-granddaughter Rachel Larkin; and ex-wife Josefina, as well as his caregivers for the last four years, Kelly Marie and Nancy Clifford. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Norman and Gladys, and sisters Esther and Norma Jean.

A memorial service will be held at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 301 Trinity St. in Arroyo Grande, on Tuesday, May 20 at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please give to a charity that touches your heart and think of Larry as you do. He is now healed. He can skip again.
