OBITUARY: Amanda Bruce Petree 1843-1913
Mrs. Amanda Petree, who died at her home in Bland County, Virginia November 16th, 1913, was the daughter of Josiah and Manerva Bruce. She was born April 3rd, 1843. Being reared in such a godly home, it is not strange that she enabled all the elements of a noble Christian and united with the Methodist Church. Her home was the preacher's home. The memory of the sweet Christian fellowship and generous hospitality of that home lingers as a precious benediction, although more than thirty years have passed since the writer was her pastor.
She was united in marriage April 22nd, 1867 with B. F. [Benjamin Franklin] Petree, with whom she lived a happy life until he was called home about four years ago. Sister Petree was not blessed with children of her own, but hers was a true mother's heart. She loved the children and young people, and they knew it and loved her dearly.
Her brother's children in their nearby home will always think of "Aunt Mandie" as a second mother.
Her last illness was short, the summons found her with "trimmed and burning".
The high esteem in which she held was attested by the large concourse of relatives and friends at the funeral services, when her body was laid to rest in the Bruce Cemetery, awaiting the resurrection of the just.
