Fidel Silvano Gallegos passed away peacefully in his home in Albuquerque on April 11, 2015 at the age of 87 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Fidel was born on May 19, 1927, in Colonias, NM to Fidel and Cleofitas Gallegos. Fidel attended high school in Santa Rosa, NM and graduated from Browning University with an Associates degree.
Fidel served in World War II and the Korean Conflict and retired from the Naval Reserve at age 60.
After his service, he was employed by the BLM until his retirement.
Fidel had many interests including fur trapping, cattle ranching, and had a keen knowledge of the history of Guadalupe County. Fidel was a talented saxophone and accordion player. Fidel formed and orchestrated a band known as the “Rocking Wild Cats” during the 1950s – 1970s. Fidel enjoyed visiting with his friends and colleagues each day at a local restaurant.
Fidel was preceded in death by his parents, Fidel and Cleofitas Gallegos, brother, Bernabe Gallegos and sisters, Ernestine Ulibarrí, Josephine Ulibarrí, Amelia Maestas and Adela Sisneros.
Fidel is survived by his sisters, Portana Baca, Cleo Luna and her husband, Florencio, brother, Ted Gallegos and his wife, Merlinda and a large, loving extended family including numerous nephews and nieces.
Fidel will always be remembered for his polite demeanor, generosity, appreciation of family, his joyfulness even during his illness, and mostly for his love of Jesus, for it was his strong faith in God that gave him strength in his final days.
A rosary will be held on Monday, April 20, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at the Shrine of the Little Flower, Saint Therese of the Infant Jesus Parish. Funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. at the Shrine of the Little Flower. Interment of ashes will follow at a later date at San José Cemetery in Colonias, NM, where he requested to be buried near his father.
