Francisco Gómez was born in Sonora, Mexico, about 1827. He came to California sometime after 1848 and settled at Los Angeles. He married Marta (maiden name unknown), who was the widow of Luís (last name unknown), who died in 1860. During the Civil War Francisco enlisted as a sergeant at Los Angeles February 7, 1864, and was mustered into Company D, 1st Battalion, Native California Cavalry, at Drum Barracks March 3, 1864. His enlisting officer described him as being 36 years old, 5 feet 9 inches tall, with dark complexion, hazel eyes, and black hair. Francisco gave his birthplace as Sonora, México, and his occupation as saddler. After muster he was appointed commissary sergeant. Sergeant Gomez died at Drum Barracks October 16, 1864, and was buried in the post cemetery. No record of a reinterment for this veteran was found. Years later his widow Marta married Diego Morelos at San Juan Capistrano about 1880. After Diego died, Marta filed for a Civil War widow's pension at Los Angeles August 30, 1889, and received application No. 403,224 and certificate No. 427,332.
