Margrethe Greta Eichholz, 104, of Cook and formerly of Vermilion Dam, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at the Cook Nursing Home.
She was born Margrethe Sonicksen on June 28, 1898, at Juhl, Mich., to Peter and Carlina (Christensen) Sonicksen. She grew up in Bedford, Mich., and married Henry W. Eichholz on June 1, 1916, at Battle Creek, Mich. The couple lived in Michigan and Ohio, and together they settled at Vemilion Dam in 1920. In 1953 they moved to Norwegian Bay on Lake Vermilion, where they built their home. Greta was a homemaker, and loved flower gardening and was known for her beautiful flower beds surrounding their home on the lake. Her husband, Henry, was a hunting and fishing guide, drove school bus, logged, farmed and was a carpenter. Greta was known for her hospitality, and enjoyed having people stop and visit year-round. She had been residing at Cook Nursing Home since 1992.
She is survived by a daughter, Madeline (Lawrence) Wilcox, of Virginia; two sisters, Martha Walker of Battle Creek, Mich., and Emma McPeake of Iron Mountain, Mich.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Henry Eichholz, in 1986; a son, Richard Eichholz, in 2001; and a daughter, Alice McCarraher, in 1997.
Burial will be in Birch Grove Cemetery at Vermilion Dam.
