Carl V. "Meats" Carlson Jr., 74, of Lake Vermilion, Tower, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, in Cook Community Convalescent Nursing Care Unit.

He was born Nov. 7, 1925, in Virginia to Carl and Helmi (Maki) Carlson. He grew up and attended school in Virginia and graduated from Roosevelt High School, class of 1944. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served as a radioman during World War II aboard the USS James O'Hara and the USS Mobjack. Following his discharge, he attended Virginia Junior College.

On Oct. 30, 1954, he was united in marriage to Jackie Lustig in Virginia. Following marriage, the couple lived in Virginia and Duluth before making their home on Lake Vermilion in 1980. He was employed by Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway as a depot agent and later as a supervisor. He retired Aug. 31, 1982.

He was a member of Nelson Jackson American Legion Post 245 of Tower and was a former member of Elks Virginia Lodge 1003, Northern Club and Virginia Rifle Club. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and his home on Lake Vermilion.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Milton; and his parents.

Carl is survived by his wife, Jackie; sons Carl V. ''Boofer'' (Dawn) Carlson III of Virginia, Todd (Kathy) Borden of Lake Vermilion, and Rex Borden of San Ysidro, Calif.; daughters Wende (James) Morrell of Duluth and Jill (Terry) Wagoner of Tower; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sisters Bernice (Ed) Duhant of Virginia, Lucille (John) Westby of Britt and Marie (Arnie)Iversen of Half Moon Bay, Calif.

Burial will be in Birch Grove Cemetery, Vermilion Dam.
