Frances was the daughter of James R. Gray and Mary Walden. In the obituary for her brother it was stated that Frances was the first child born in Carmi, Illinois.
In 1839 she married Alexander M. Griffin and they had two children, P. Gray (1840–1840) and Bertha (~1844–?). Alexander, Frances and Bertha are living in Graysville in the 1850 Census (under surname GRIFFING), where Alexander is listed as a Trader. Although one marriage license transcription states Alexander's and Frances' middle names were both Meriwether, no link to the Meriwether family has been found for Alexander and perhaps the transcription copied the middle name from Frances.
In 1857 Frances married Meredith Ambrose Helm, the brother of John Jacob Helm who had married Frances' sister, Mary Walden Gray in 1855. Meredith and Frances had one son, Strother, named for Merediths father.
