The death has occurred at Gore of Mr Alexander Alexander, at the age of 88 years, a well-known resident of Eastern Southland. Mr Alexander came to New Zealand when a boy. For a short time he stayed at North Taieri, and then went to Fairfax to complete -his education. Subsequently he worked at Wyndham, Edendale and Brydone as a contractor, and during the mining boom he settled at Waikaia. Horse racing was the big sporting attraction at the time and with money flowing freely, high stakes were offered. Mr Alexander was the owner of a horse which won the leading event one year. Later he turned his attention to farming, being first at Wendon and later at Balfour, where he spent the remainder of his life.
