"Julius Herman Achterberg, was born at Bruchhoff, Province of Pommern , Germany on March 8, 1849. As a young man, he served in the Franko-Prussian war in 1870 and 1871. He was married to Frederika Achterberg in 1873, and came to America in 1875, and settled at Castle Garden , Minnesota . They came to Thayer County in 1881 and lived in a dugout on a farm two miles west of Deshler, until their first home was completed." From DESHLER: THE FIRST ONE HUNDRED YEARS.

Death of Julius Achterberg

Julius Achterberg, a pioneer resident of Deshler, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. August Zierns, in Davenport, Tuesday morning, where he has been staying the last three months. He was born in Germany, March 8, 1849. He leaves to mourn his death four sons, three daughters, and two sisters and a host of other relatives and friends. He reached an age of 83 years, 5 months, and 22 days. The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Anna Eickmann, in Deshler, and Immanuel Lutheran church (sic), two miles west of Deshler.
