Nancy Penelope Asbury was born on August 4, 1843 while her parents, Richard Asbury & Nancy Baker (Yeatman) Asbury were moving from Virginia, all throughout the U.S. (her younger sister, Elizabeth (Asbury) Hunt, was born 2 years after her in Arkansas), until they finally settled in Southwest Wisconsin. Her mother died in November of 1852 in Iowa County, Wisconsin when Nancy was only nine. The exact date and place of burial is unknown to any current researchers of this family - the date & location (Pulaski Township) come from Richard Asbury's application for a father's pension, based on his son Alexander's death in the Civil War.

Nancy married George W. Bartholomew in Boscobel, Grant Co., Wisconsin on October 2nd, 1856. They had four children before he was called up to serve in the Wisconsin Infantry, 43rd Regiment, Company F - the same company in which his brother-in-law, Thomas H. Asbury, also served. George died of Measles while stationed near Nashville, Tennessee, on January 6, 1865, and is buried in Nashville National Cemetery, with a Government-provided Civil War headstone. Nancy received a land pension on behalf of her minor children, based on George's service in the Civil War.

On May 6, 1866 Nancy married Martin Shisler in DeSoto, Vernon County, Wisconsin, and they had at least 8 children, and at least 4 of those grew to adulthood, married and had children. In the 1870 Census, two of her suriving Bartholomew children were living in the household of her father, Richard Asbury. In the 1880 Census, her youngest Bartholomew child, Robert, was living with her and her second husband, Martin Shisler. Most researchers of this family attribute the middle name of "Van Buren" to Martin Shisler, but his headstone appears to show a middle initial of "U.," so that is unclear.

Nancy died on March 22nd, 1932 in Faribault, Rice County, Minnesota while living with one of her children, after Martin had passed away back in Wisconsin.
